HOUGHTON HARRIERS & ATHLETICS CLUB
Houghton Harriers & Athletics Club is a community running and athletics club in the North East of England. We are friendly and inclusive and successful.
We are a long established athletics club in the North East. The club was originally formed in 1958 and has played a key role in developing people throughout the region. The club merged with Peterlee for a period in recent years and gave the two, already well established but relatively small, clubs a greater competitive edge against larger clubs in the region.
Today, Houghton Harriers & Athletics Club is focused on the Houghton area and draws its membership mainly from the region around Houghton-le-Spring, from County Durham and from within the City of Sunderland.
One of its earliest members included Ernie Pomfret who went on to represent GB & NI in the 3000 metres Steeplechase in the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games and also represented England in the 1966 Commonwealth games held in Jamaica.
Many years later Lynn Cooper ( nee Harding ), who is presently coaching at the club, represented Scotland in both the 1990 and 1994 Commonwealth games in the marathon event.
We have had other members who have represented England and GB & NI in recent years at various age levels so we have a good track record of developing talent from a young age.
